Accomplished successes

1986
Kinderhulp Afrika is established by Mathijs Piet. First contacts with orphan children in Uganda came through the involvement we had with an African children’s choir which spent 3 months touring The Netherlands.

1987
Together with the American charity Ambassadors of Hope a start was made in the establishing of orphanages in Uganda.

1989
Independent charity was launched. This is known in Uganda as Childrens Welfare Mission under supervision of Cor & Grace Koelewijn.

1990
Purchase of 62 acres of land in Namugongo, 10 kilometres outside Kampala, to be used to build a multifunctional children’s village to accommodate orphans.

1991
Start of the construction of the buildings for the centre.

1992
Completion of the first buildings and the first group of orphans was taken in.

1993
Realisation of the school classrooms and the opening of the primary school known as The Samaritan Academy. There are now approximately 50 orphans in our village.

1994-1998
In these years we are faced with the consequences of the civil war in Ruanda. Until 1998 the charity helps approximately 100 children in an orphanage in Butara, Rwanda.

1994-1995
Further development of the village; electricity, drainage-canal and infrastructure.

1996
Decision made to make a radical extension to the children’s centre Namugongo. A First Aid and medical clinic was built. A start was made in the construction of new houses to accommodate the children.

1997- 1998
More houses were constructed on the grounds. The primary school was extended from 3 to 7 classrooms (P1 to P7). The kitchens were extended and the washrooms and toilets were refurbished. A new water tower was constructed with a capacity of 20.000 litres. The medical clinic was extended to accommodate a delivery room. A generator was installed so that there would be electric current in case of emergencies or electric cuts (it was quite normal to have cuts 30/ 40 hours per week).

1999
Construction of a multifunctional hall. Fences were built around the compound, roads and footpaths were asphalted and all the buildings, the houses and clinic, were repainted and where necessary, renovated or repaired.

2000
Construction of two new buildings to house new members of staff. A start was made in the construction of a new circle of houses for the children and the construction of the technical school.

2001
Purchase of 37 acres of adjacent land for the necessary extensions to the children’s village in Namugongo. The first buildings to be constructed were those for the vocational school.

2002
Vocational school opens with the first 30 students. Two new circles of houses were built with accommodation for 150 children.

2003
Laying out of sport fields. The office building is extended with a second floor.

2004
More work done on the vocational school and accommodation constructed to house the teachers in the school.

2005
The completion of the vocational school, which is extended with a secondary school. The name of the school: NSVS (Namugongo Secondary Vocational School).

2006
The first build circle of houses are renovated. These 10 houses are made higher, provided with a new roof, windows, doors and new sanitary. The projectmanagers Cor & Grace decided to hand over their task to new projectmanagers: Gert & Esther van den Boom.

2007
New sleeping accommodation building with sanitary for another 160 children is build. In total there is room now for 450 children.

2008
A new watertower of 30.000 lt is build, so that the village has enough clean drinking water. The start of a new electric installation with solar panels is made. The NSVS is extended with 3 more classrooms, a reception and offices.

2009
The children’s village has been expended with three class rooms, a teachers room and toilet units. Next to that the infrastructure has been renewed and a start is made to build another four classrooms for the NSVS. The total amount of children who are living in the children’s village is 567.

2010
The building process for four extra class rooms to extend the vocational school is going on in full speed.
